The city of Philadelphia had been home to an NHL team before for one season; the Philadelphia Quakers during the 1930-31 NHL season. After setting the NHL record for fewest wins in a season, they suspended operations for the next and subsequent seasons until they finally cancelled the franchise in 1936. Philadelphia waited another 30 years for the NHL to return when in 1966, the league awarded an expansion franchise to the city. Flyers was the name chosen for the new franchise as it conveyed the motion and excitement that was to be consistent with both hockey in general, as well as the new Philadelphia club.

I’d say maybe something to do with aviation, but I guess that would go to Ohio and their state motto.
I just looked it up, apparently when they were brainstorming to name the franchise, someone said Flier, which turned into flyer. They pictured people skating and maneuvering (flying) down the ice.
All I can tell you is that the logo is a flying “P” for Philadelphia
I don’t know where the name originated though
I don’t know what the meaning of “Flyers” is. But I do know that Ed Snider’s sister came up with the name.
Because these guys can fly on their skates when they thought of the Names and the fans liked it they won 2 Stanley Cups 1973-74, 1974-75, and they are as big in Philly as the Cheesesteak is which is a good thing because Philly is a real Hockeytown.
